The environment needs PR too

Corporations have the resources to use public relations and marketing to their advantage. Social causes, such as the environment do not. The extent to which big business makes use of these tools proves difficult for social movements to counter.

The only way to break the imbalance is for individuals to take part in making small changes for the betterment of society. So in order to lower our environmental impact this holiday season, we must begin by curbing our excessive consumerism.

Too soon for Christmas advertising?

Even though Halloween decorations are barely down, stores have had their Christmas displays up for weeks. The reason for this is simple; to give consumers the most possible time to buy, buy, buy. So if big box stores think it’s appropriate to advertise for Christmas in November, why shouldn’t the environmental movement?

My notion for you this Christmas is to stop buying unnecessary products and set a goal of enjoying a green Christmas this season.

Why buy products for a religious holiday?

If the point is to prove to our loved ones that we care, material goods shouldn’t be the answer. Doing something with your loved ones whether it costs money or not is a much better way to bond than giving them an iPad. With gadgets, all you’re doing is providing infinite ways to avoid family time. In giving the gift of a shared experience, not only will you bond, but you will also avoid the wasteful use of packaging and wrapping.

What about an environmentally friendly tree choice?

While plastics trees don’t involve cutting a live tree, they are made of harmful chemicals and don’t have the authentic Christmas feel. This holiday season consider renting a living tree. Companies, such as the Gift of Green, will actually deliver a living potted tree to your house and pick it up after the holidays.

What are other ways to enjoy a green Christmas?

  • Wrap gifts in recycled newspaper comics.
  • Switch to low energy light bulbs and save up to 85% of energy consumption over traditional bulbs.

So for next two months, avoid the big Christmas displays and instead come up with ideas to make your celebration an eco-friendly one. Make memories and not clutter this holiday season.

Finally, spread the word because social causes need PR too.

What are your ideas for a waste free Christmas?
